Oliver Sacks, celebrated neurologist and author, died yesterday at his home in Manhattan, at the age of 82. A gentle and curious human being, Dr. Sacks popularized the workings of the brain with numerous books that vividly describe the experiences of patients with neurological disorders.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.
In his most recent articles for The New York Times, My Own Life and My Periodic Table, he wrote on the subject of his illness and his life.
You will be missed, Dr. Sacks.
